Back to Class - Babywearing Education
I was first introduced to babywearing by my friend, Genevieve. She was a babywearing teacher and leader of a then-active babywearing group in Pittsburgh. She gifted me my first wrap - a Wrapsody Lalita Breeze, a gorgeous red woven wrap. It was a gift that completely transformed my experience as a new parent.
On some level, that wrap saved my life.
You see, up until that point, my baby could not be put down. She could not stop moving. She had to be held and bounced and rocked and swayed. She needed that movement, that closeness, that comfort. And I needed a break.
I was done - d. o. n. e.
Learning just a simple front cross carry was enough to give both my daughter and I what we needed. She felt secure, enjoying every movement of our days, and I was able to be more hands-free, getting things done, feeling more human again.
From there we branched out into back carries, hip carries, stretchy wraps and soft-structured carriers. Even my husband got in on it - embracing both the wraps and the carriers.
We traveled without strollers. We explored places that would otherwise be inaccessible for babies and toddlers. Babywearing truly transformed the way we were living and parenting.
I am excited to share that skill set and experience with new parents by becoming a babywearing consultant this fall through the Center for Babywearing Studies Foundations course. Just as there are loads of different ways to be a parent, there are loads of different ways to wear your baby. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach, and I'm excited to learn the ins and outs of different carries, carriers and methods. I can't wait to share this knowledge with parents, grandparents, and caregivers.
I get why some people are put off by babywearing. The various tying methods can be very overwhelming at first. In fact, my first response to Genevieve offering to teach me was "Are you sure I can handle these crazy directions?".
But you know what? With a good teacher (such was Gen), good instructions, a good carrier and a bit of practice, you'll have it down in no time.
If you're interested in learning more about babywearing options, please connect with me. I'll be happy to either show you how to use a carrier you already own, or we can walk through other options that might work for you and your family.
